The national smart meter rollout is accelerating across NSW. All homes must have smart meters by 2030. During installation, technicians inspect your electrical system — and older homes are failing compliance checks at record rates. If your home was built before 2000, you're at higher risk of receiving a defect notice.
An electrical defect notice is a formal document issued by your electricity distributor (Ausgrid or Essential Energy in our region) after they identify safety or compliance issues with your property's electrical installation.
These notices are issued during routine inspections, smart meter installations, or when a technician identifies a hazard. The notice specifies the defect, the required rectification, and a deadline — typically 21 days.
The defect must be rectified by a licensed Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP). Once the work is completed, the ASP issues a Certificate of Compliance and notifies the distributor to clear the notice.

Authorised by Ausgrid & Essential Energy to perform defect rectification, meter work, and service connections.
These are the most common defects flagged by Ausgrid and Essential Energy in the Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, and Hunter Valley regions. We handle all of them.
Old ceramic fuses, no safety switches (RCDs), or damaged switchboard enclosures that don't meet current AS/NZS 3000 standards.
Aging rubber or cloth-insulated wiring, damaged cable insulation, or exposed conductors creating fire and shock hazards.
Asbestos meter boards, damaged enclosures, incorrect clearances, or metering equipment that fails smart meter compatibility checks.
Damaged, leaning, or rotting private power poles. Sagging overhead service lines or vegetation encroachment on conductors.
Missing or corroded earth electrodes, inadequate bonding of metallic services, or non-compliant main earthing systems.
Common in older multi-dwelling properties — shared fusing means one meter feeds multiple units, which is non-compliant and must be separated.
